The Posture of Expectation: When Open Hands Invite a Faithful God
There is something powerful about standing before God with open hands. It is the universal posture of surrender—yet it is also the position of expectation. It says, “Lord, I release what I can’t control, and I receive what only You can do.”
Recently, as I reflected on my own journey, the Holy Spirit whispered a truth that shaped today’s blog:
“I stand in expectation with open hands because God has never failed to fill what I surrender. Running from the Sower may describe my past, but expectation describes my future.”
That is the miracle of walking with God:
He never meets open hands with emptiness.
Expectation Isn’t Entitlement — It’s Trust
Expectation doesn’t mean demanding an outcome.
It means trusting the God who writes outcomes.
When we stand in expectation, we are not telling God what He must do—
we are declaring who He already is:
- Faithful
- Consistent
- Provider
- Promise Keeper
- Good Shepherd
Expectation flows from knowing Him, not manipulating Him.
Psalm 62:5 says:
“My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him.”
Expectation isn’t rooted in circumstances.
It’s rooted in Him alone.
What Happens in the Posture of Expectation?
When you stand before God with open hands, several things begin to shift—
not just around you, but within you.
1. God Exchanges Your Burdens for His Peace
You can’t hold anxiety and expectation at the same time.
Something has to be released.
The moment you surrender what’s heavy, God fills you with what’s holy—peace, clarity, and strength.
He never leaves empty spaces.
2. You Become Positioned for God’s Timing
Expectation aligns you with heaven’s calendar.
It teaches you to wait without wandering, to trust without panicking.
Habakkuk 2:3 reminds us:
“The vision is for an appointed time… though it tarry, wait for it.”
Expectation keeps your heart ready when the promise arrives.
3. God Begins to Renew Your Vision
When your hands are open, your eyes begin to open too.
You start to see:
- opportunities you missed,
- direction you prayed for,
- purpose you didn’t recognize before.
Expectation sharpens spiritual sight.
4. You Make Room for What God Wants to Pour
Closed hands protect what you already have.
Open hands prepare you for overflow.
God fills where we allow Him to flow.
5. Your Future Becomes Defined by Faith, Not Fear
Your past may have been filled with running—running from calling, from correction, from healing, from the Sower Himself.
But expectation speaks a new identity:
“My future belongs to the God I’m running toward, not the mistakes I ran from.”
This is where the story turns.
This is where Running from the Sower becomes Returning to the Sower.
Expectation Honors God
Faith pleases God, but expectation glorifies Him.
Expectation says:
- “I believe You can.”
- “I trust You will.”
- “I know You’re good.”
- “I’m ready for whatever Your will looks like.”
It honors God because it believes God.
Your Invitation Today
If you are in a season of waiting, longing, or uncertainty, God is inviting you to adopt the posture of expectation.
Not clenched fists.
Not crossed arms.
Not fearful hesitation.
But open hands—
the posture that says, “Fill me again, Lord.”
Because He always does.
And as I’ve learned in my own journey, including the pages of Running from the Sower, your past may explain where you were, but expectation declares where you’re going.
Call to Action
If this encouraged you, share it with someone who needs to be reminded:
Expectation is not weakness—it’s worship.
